Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, who famously said that the U.S. was creating suicide bombers by going to war with "freedom fighters" in Iraq, refused to answer for her more controversial statements, instead hanging up on a radio host who confronted her with quotes from terrorist leaders who had praised her words.
"Cindy, you are giving aid and comfort to terrorists, are you not?" asked Aaron Klein, WND's senior reporter who hosts an investigative radio program on New York's WABC radio. "I mean, it is from their own words."
Interviewing Sheehan on his WABC show today, Klein read to her quotes that he says he personally obtained from radical Islamic leaders during the course of writing his book, "Schmoozing with Terrorists."
Klein says he presented to terrorist leaders transcripts of some of Sheehan's past statements, including her assertion that President Bush was "the biggest terrorist in the world" and "worse than Osama bin Laden"; her numerous characterizations of Iraqi insurgents as "freedom fighters"; and her claim that her son had been "killed for lies and for a neo-con agenda to benefit Israel."
Sheehan's son, Casey, a U.S. Army soldier, was killed in combat in Iraq in 2004.
The terrorists, in turn, praised the outspoken anti-war activist for her efforts:
* "You give us hope, and you show us that there are different Americans than those whom we know," stated Ramadan Adassi, chief of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades in the West Bank's Anskar Refugee Camp. "This sincere woman [Sheehan] says what we've been saying all these last years - Saddam never threatened America or its security. Now Iraq is being decimated and America is losing. Voices like Sheehan's show things can change."
* Ala Senakreh, West Bank chief of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, stated: "I agree with [Sheehan] completely and thank her from deep in my heart when she dares to tell the Americans that their children are killed for the interests of Israel."
* Abu Hamed, leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades in the northern Gaza Strip, said: "I hope that all the Americans will understand what this great mother understood. ... She is saying the truth. I hope you will take her as a good example."
But when Klein read those quotes to Sheehan and asked whether her activism was giving aid to terrorists, Sheehan deflected the question, became accusatory and hung up without answering the charge.

Sheehan is facing a trial stemming back to a March 20 peace protest in Washington, D.C., when she was arrested for crossing a police barrier to lie down on the sidewalk in front of the White House fence.
Klein began the interview by asking Sheehan about the protest and whether she is disappointed that Obama hasn't followed through on his anti-war pledges from the presidential campaign.
"I never supported Obama, because he was not an anti-war candidate," Sheehan clarified, arguing that he may have fooled others with his lofty rhetoric, but that she warned the public he would not be a "peace" president.
Sheehan once said that "we are not waging a war on terror in this country; we are waging a war of terror."
When asked if she still felt that way under the new Obama administration, she answered, "There's been absolutely no change, except in many cases for the worse, since Obama has been elected," even lamenting that Obama has, in her words, been very effective at "neutralizing" the anti-war effort.
On domestic policy, she was equally critical of the president, arguing that Obama's major initiatives haven't been as socialist as she would like.
"I see [Obama] more as a corporatist because the health-care legislation was basically just a giveaway for private health insurance companies. It's not single-payer," she said. "And the stimulus bill was, of course, just another giveaway to private corporations."
When the talk turned to U.S. foreign policy leaders, Sheehan turned accusatory.
"They really don't care if civilians are killed, and we have killed over a million in Iraq, displaced millions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, so I believe that is a war of terror," she said.
When Klein pointed out that U.S. official sources only cite roughly 100,000 civilian casualties, Sheehan argued those numbers came from "the U.S. war machine."
And when Klein discussed nuclear policy, reasoning that Iran shouldn't have atomic weapons because of its threats of violence but that the U.S. has been a responsible nuclear power, Sheehan laughed.
"A responsible nuclear power?" she scoffed. "The United States is the only country that has used nuclear weapons … I don't think that's very responsible."
But when Klein turned to how Islamic terrorists have praised her and thanked her for her words, Sheehan turned the accusations on her host, claiming he had misrepresented himself.
"You actually, when you asked for this interview, you actually misrepresented yourself and you lied to me," she stated. "You said you wanted to talk about my trial. We're not talking about my trial."
Even though Klein proceeded to read to Sheehan his e-mail interview request, arguing he neither stated nor implied that the conversation would be limited to her trial, Sheehan abruptly hung up, ending the interview.
Her retreat, however, provided Klein the opportunity to get in the last word.
"This is exactly what happens when the far left is confronted with their own hypocrisy or with proof they are aiding America's enemies," Klein later stated in his program. "They shut down the conversation."
